Messerschmitt Bf 109: The Early Years – Poland, The Fall of France And The Battle Of Britain
By: Chris Goss
Publisher: Frontline Books
The iconic Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter was the premier offensive weapon of Germany’s Luftwaffe during World War II until the arrival of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. This versatile aircraft saw action in all the fronts Germany was fighting at the time and performed admirably.
This book, part of the Air War Archive, contains many black and white photos of the Bf 109 in different situations. It covers the early part of the Bf 109’s career from the invasion of Poland to the Battle Of France to the Battle of Britain. Some photos show crashed planes not only in Germany, but France and Britain.
What’s interesting about the photos here is that many show the codes on the side of the planes, useful if you are researching a particular plane’s history or Messerschmitt decals in general. Some photos show pilots next to their planes, some show planes sitting solo or in crashed positions.
The photo captions are short, but very informative. Many times they give a lot of contextual information for the photo, such as location, pilot, plane history, etc. The photos show quite a few pilots standing next to their planes also, a handy bit of info to have if you are modeling both plane and pilot.
Overall, this is a great book to have for research or modeling uses. Another fine book from the publisher.
